The outpouring of love and support for Nipsey Hussle and his family continues to grow as the world mourns his death and celebrate his legacy. It’s only been a week since the tragic shooting and as his family, peers and fans reflect on his untimely passing, there has been surge in recognizing the impact the Victory Lap rapper made on this earth. This week Nipsey Hussle’s debut album Victory Lap took the number two spot on Billboard 200. After debuting at number four in March 2018, Hussle’s entire catalogue is gaining new listeners daily with people discovering his 13 mixtapes and studio album. An online movement to rename the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard as “Ermias ‘Nipsey Hussle’ Asghedom Square,” has gained over 480,000 signatures on Change.org and the vigil in front of Hussle’s Marathon Clothing store continues to grow as Nipsey’s city pays it’s respect to the late artist. L.A. Councilman and friend to Hussle, Marqueece Harris-Dawson started the petition and will introduce the motion this friday to the city council. With countless headlines and social media posts dedicated to Hussle, his unexpected death won’t be processed in the typical span of a week in entertainment news and with an upcoming memorial at Staples Center in Los Angeles the world will have a collective moment honor a man that had a vision bigger than a couple songs on an album. His achievements within his community will live on and the work done with the coworking space Vector 90 and Marathon brand will continue to inspire artists to make a bigger impact beyond their music.
Today (April 11th) from 10am-12pm (PST) Staples Center will be packed with loved ones and fans that want to celebrate Nipsey Hussle’s legacy. For those who can’t attend, BET will be broadcasting the entire funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. ET on BET and BET Digital. BET News’ Marc Lamont Hill and entertainment journalist Gia Peppers will host: “BET Remembers: Nipsey Hussle” which will be presented live and commercial-free. Tickets for the memorial sold out within minutes when they went live earlier this week. While Hussle’s family made the service free, a few ticket holders have tried to profit on this delicate moment and resell memorial tickets for hundreds of dollars on Craigslist. AXS distributed the original tickets and potential attendees were required to have a California zip code to receive the free tickets but with the tickets selling out in 20 minutes many fans missed their opportunity to pay their respects in person. Craigslist quickly shut down the scam and for the fans that got tickets they’ll be able to celebrate a life that was loved by many and take part in a historic moment in Hip Hop.
